My 2020 Davis Cup experience
New tennis season is here and the games are finally starting to steer their locations towards eastern Europe.
I took all my gear and drove to Bratislava to cover the Davis cup qualifiers between the Slovak tennis team and the one of the Czech Republic. I tried my best to cover this event visually and in text. Here is how I did it.
I missed out on the first of four matches that took place over the course of this event together with the after-game press conference so I was in time debt from the very beginning of this two-day gig.
Finally, I found a place to park and literally rushed my way into the photo pit. I was pleased to see that one of my photo reporter pals from Brno was working there with me. It was one of those moments when you keep meeting the same person at different events, but it isn’t until you both find yourself out of your comfort zones that the silence breaks.
I was eager to grab some decent shots right from the beginning. I wanted to be ready to send them to my editor right after the match.
The last time I shot tennis was about three months ago though and I found myself in a position of struggle for a while again. I couldn’t for the life of me grab a shot that would show any kind of emotion.
I thought to myself that I can always just send a plain text announcing the match results and it calmed me down for a little bit, but I couldn’t escape that “come on Tomas, dammit!” phrase in my head.
When I finally grabbed a usefull image I quickly ran it through a rough edit on my computer and wrote a short headline in advance to go along with the photo. I admit there was a bit of black magic and blind forecasting involved, but I wanted to be ready and I could always rewrite it. After I had everything sat I could continue shooting in an attemp for a better shot.
Since I was not only shooting but also attempting to build a written story from the event I had to run into the newsroom right after each game. There I edited my photos in about fifteen minutes, then took my computer and ran to a press conference.
I always headed straight to the first row of seats with my laptop in one hand and a 70-200 millimetre lens in the other, just in case something happens.
The minute I sat down I opened up my laptop and quickly collected any interesting quotes those players and captain say. After that, it was time to make another run for a good spot in the photo pit.
I repeated this process about three times. Then it was over and I was expected to turn in a full story. That would have been hard to do for me after a long day of work, but thankfully I was clever enough to pre-make a story from the previous day, and I just kept adding new layers to that story over the course of the second day.
Still, I left Bratislava at about midnight and returned to Brno completely brain dead at about 2 am.
I would do it all again in a heartbeat though.
